Quinceañera also called quince años or quince, is the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday and is recognized in Latin America and all over the world. This constitutes a ceremony to mark her passage to womanhood, give thanks to God for his blessings, and present her as a young woman to the community. The Quinceanera tradition is believed to have started when the Spanish conquerors that brought the tradition to Mexico and others say the tradition originated with the Aztecs.
The Quinceanera celebration usually begins with a religious ceremony. A Reception is held in the home or a banquet hall. The celebration includes food, music, and a choreographed waltz or other dance performed by the Quinceanera and her Court.
The traditional Quinceanera will choose special friends to participate in what is called the Court of Honor. The Quinceanera’s Court of Honor can be comprised of young girls called Dama and young men called Chambelán or Escorte or Galán. She will pick young people who are her closest friends, brothers, sisters, and all the special people in her life with whom she wants to share the spotlight in her age group. The Quinceanera wears a ball gown, with her Court dressed in gowns and tuxedos.
Traditionally there are three different types of dances performed at a Quinceanera. There is the father daughter waltz, the traditional group dance, done by the Quinceanera and her court, and the surprise dance, also done by the Quinceanera and her court, but less traditional. All of these dances involve some type of choreographed steps, and depending on the complexity of the steps you choose, rehearsals should start very early on, months before the actual event.
The group dance must be spectacular and you may want to have it choreographed, so hire a professional. It’s often a waltz with Latin influences but many other styles from the foxtrot to Renaissance dance styles are used. The group dance is designed to showcase the girl celebrating her Quinceanera and she will choose a dance style that reflects her personality.
The Father Daughter Waltz is a simple but elegant dance that requires special attention. The special choreography must reflect the importance in its symbolism of a father acknowledging his daughter’s entrance into womanhood.
